Wardrobe Worries

Many days, I arrive at a shoot to find my clients clad in perfectly chosen garments for their portraits. Other times, I'm juggling to arrange a Hawaiian shirt wearer far away from a plaid shirt wearer. In order for ME to help you look your best, it all starts with YOU. So to help take the "worry" out of wardrobe issues, here's a few tips to consider!
1. Think Classy
Trendy clothing is great, but in moderation. Remember, these are the images you'll hold onto for years.... so chose outfits/patterns/colors accordingly. Yes, those pink flamingos are totally cute, but will you like that style when you are ten years older? First off, dress accordingly to the style of shoot you want. Don't dress summer skirts on Mom and winter jackets on Son. Then, start by choosing a neutral base color. Add a bit of personality by adding a color or two for coordination but not exact matches.... Here's an example:

This theme is perfect. Not to manny textures, calming colors, and easy to reproduce from your own closets. Don't hesitate to purchase a new shirt or shoes. Your portraits are an investment!
Thinking Classy also means making sure your looking your best. Hair combed. Teeth brushed. You get the idea. Gel on hair is ok, but tends to make hair look wet, so moderate use is suggested. Ladies, pin those bangs so I can see your eyes! Speaking of eyes, they pop much better if a bit of mascara is applied. Don't over-do it though. Let me show your natural beauty, don't cover it all up! Again, think Classy... On the flip side, if you are a makeup lovin' sister, (or mister!) go for it. These are just suggestions.
2. Watch Patterns!
Remember the Hawaiian shirt example I gave above? I've got nothing against personality, but please be careful not to choose outfits that will draw the eye away from YOU and onto your shirt... Speaking of that, unless someone is paying you to be their personal billboard, leave the logos at home, yall. Chose apparel that will blend and coordinate... If Dad HAS to bring the Hawaii into the photo, check out this example:

This image is classy, themed and the attention is brought right to the family, not to their patterns or textures. They have a styled addition (the leis) to hint of the season. Although the image is small, Dad does has patterns on his shirt.
The example is of a "summer" or "Hawaiian" style shoot, but the idea can be applied for any kind of shoot be it Spring, Fall or Winter.
3. BE COMFORTABLE.
Yes, be classy. Be cautious. But goodness folks, please be comfortable! Being photographed isn't easy for everyone. Allow yourself some grace and leave the black tie at home. Breathe. I can only relax a client so much; most of the stress is relieved only by the client. Throw out those pumps you never wear, ladies. Be YOU. Be beautiful!
Don't forget, I'm here. I do this for a living. Any questions or wardrobe worries can be sent my way and I'll do my best to steer you into the right direction!
