Tips From A Wedding Photographer

'Tis almost the season for wedding bells and champagne!

As I sat down with my 2019 brides, I find myself sharing tips I've learned along the way. I am no expert at planning such an event, but being behind the scenes has allowed me to watch and learn some important hacks, tips and lessons for future brides! So here's a few major topics I like to bring up at my booking sessions... And congratulations to all the couples taking the plunge this year!

3. PENNY PINCHERS: When you think of your special day, what things come to mind? Minimalistic yet sentimental? Glamorous and sophisticated? Every wedding

I've attended, shot, or planned WENT OVER BUDGET. If you can't live without the trimmings, wait until you can afford your dream. Work hard to save. It's not worth going into debt!!! That being said, there are always ways to save money.. Pinterest is full of cost-saving ideas!

One of my favorites is with my own portion: Cut back an hour or so of photography at the reception and have your guests help instead. Print out a "Photo Scavenger Hunt" and place the lists around the venue. Make sure to add a hashtag, and encourage guests to capture your day through THEIR eyes. This is creative, interactive for guests and can save you several hundred dollars! Another saver is to check out upscale thrift or consignment stores for wedding dresses! My own dress was a consignment find, and after alterations only set me back $500. (See pic)

2. BENEFICIAL BRIDAL PARTY: Ok, I'm going to be frank here... Chose the people to stand by you that are truly there to support you in your union. Doesn't have to be all women on the Bride's side (and visa-versa), or your soon-to-be SIL just because tradition says so. Chose the bridesmaids, (bridesmen, groomsmen, groomsmaids) who will step up to the plate. Who has experienced crazy nights with you. Who will dive into throwing an amazing bridal shower for you. Who would slip you a donut when they realize you haven't eaten all day... you know, the nitty-gritty stuff... I had amazing people by my side for my wedding, and can't express how important YOUR TRIBE IS on the most memorable day of your life!

1. CLEVER COORDINATOR: I will always stress the necessity of an experienced day-of coordinator! After months of planning, you don't need the burden of having to 'run the show' on a day that is so monumental. After all, if it was just another everyday event, why the need for so much emotional, mental and financial input? No, your wedding should be focused on the celebration of you and your partner...not if the macaroni salad has been refilled. My own wedding was 20 minutes late due to no one telling me to drive up to the ceremony scene! So embarrassing for my bridesmaids to walk down the aisle... twice. Or was it three times?! SERIOUSLY.

From a photographer's standpoint, the coordinator is my go-to when shooting group shots. They'll know who Great Aunt Melba is and if the divorced cousins would throw a fit being in the same image (also real-life scenario). Stress and minor irritations should be given to someone you TRUST to handle it. I always ask my brides if the coordinator is a friend or hired hand... and if a friend I ask if they are "Type A". Your coordinator will need to be someone who isn't afraid to handle Melba, my friend! In the long run, hiring a professional may be an added expense worth spending!
